Jafarabadi Buffalo

The Jafarabadi buffalo (also spelled Jafrabadi or Jafferabadi, and sometimes referred to as the Gir buffalo) is a riverine buffalo breed originating in the state of Gujarat, India. It is recognized as an important dairy breed in both India and Pakistan. The estimated global population of the Jafarabadi buffalo is approximately 25,000.

The Jafarabadi was one of the first buffalo breeds to be exported to Brazil, and as of 2017, it remains one of the four major buffalo breeds found there—the others being Mediterranean, Murrah, and Swamp Buffalo.

Origin and History

The Jafarabadi buffalo derives its name from the Jafrabad region of Gujarat, India, where the breed was first identified.

According to the Indian National Scientific Documentation Centre (INSDC), the breed is believed to have originated from a hybridization between the African Cape Buffalo and the Indian Water Buffalo. Historical records suggest that African buffaloes were brought to India for meat production during the British rule, after which they crossbred with local water buffalo populations. This mixture developed into the Jafarabadi breed. Due to this mixed origin, the semen quality of this breed is sometimes reported to be comparatively weaker.

Geographical Distribution

  • India: The breed is primarily found in the Jafrabad, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh, and Gir regions of Gujarat.
  • Pakistan: It is found in limited numbers in the Sindh and Balochistan regions.
  • Brazil: It is extensively reared there for its high milk production and good meat quality.

The Jafarabadi buffalo is known for its massive size and heavy head.

Milk Production and Quality

The Jafarabadi is a medium to high-yielding dairy breed. Its milk is known for being thick, creamy, and fat-rich, making it highly suitable for producing ghee, paneer, and khoya (milk solids).

  • Average Daily Milk Yield: 8–12 litres
  • Average Fat Percentage: 7–8.5%
  • Average Lactation Period: 300–320 days

In Brazil, the breed is particularly popular due to its high milk quality and tolerance to hot and humid climatic conditions.

Special Information and Global Significance

  • Jafarabadi buffaloes are found in the vicinity of the Gir Forest National Park and are known to be a natural prey species for the Asiatic Lions.
  • The breed is well-adapted to hot and humid environments.
  • Owing to its strong physique, it is also historically used for draught purposes, such as ploughing fields and pulling carts.
  • The Jafarabadi buffalo is a leading exporter breed from India. It was imported to Brazil in the early 20th century, and today, it is among the four principal buffalo breeds in that country, contributing significantly to the global dairy industry.
